Dev Diary: Week #10 + Work in progress
Long time no see, right? Damn...
I didn't think that making a run from scratch to check the grammar among other things was going to take me so much time even though it was necessary to check that the new questlog didn't explode in every quest. Besides, this month I had some health problems that fortunately are already solved (nothing serious).
Although I already talked about this in the previous diary, I'll mention it again here: I have done a complete rework of the questlog to make it not only look better but also better structured and cleaner. Also from now on, all quests give rewards.
On my adventure through the new game, I noticed two things: There were a lot of spelling mistakes that should have been corrected and the quality of the scenes/renders in the first quests is terrible.
The first thing doesn't surprise me because it happens many times, you could ask me if I've applied all the corrections and I would say yes, then check the dialogues and they are not applied... Amazing.
The second thing... I didn't expect there to be so much bad/outdated content. This not only kept me busy for a whole week (making notes, screenshots, etc) but while I was playing I was like.... insert cries in Spanish.gif.
I'm going to give you some examples so you can see what I'm talking about (now vs v11):
There is a lot more and there are also some silly things. The problem for me is that with time I improve my technique, I have more experience and I become more demanding with the work I do, not only for me but also for those who are supporting me, I can't deliver shitty work (clipping, bad lighting, weird shadows, etc.). This sometimes brings me more headaches and frustration than it should but it's part of the job, I guess.
To simplify, in v11 I have redone the following scenes/renders:
- The part when you meet Maria during the intro.
- 80% of quest 3 (when you meet Anna).
- 80% of quest 4 (when you meet Mara).
- 90% of Yuna's level 2.
- Mara's level 3 (the paint of her room on that level is magically inexistent).
- When Lisa gets naked to give you a reward during the intro.
- When you meet the Captain + the whole Mona scene.
- All the achievements when you meet a girl including Natsuki's and Lisa's.
- etc.
There are some things that are really silly but my intention with this is that the whole game has the same quality in the scenes. This is something I'm going to redo in the next versions because although I'd like to do it all now, it's more tedious than it seems and it would need a lot of time.
To clarify, redo = redo stuff with correct lighting, current settings, a better approach, etc. Does not mean new content, but improving what already exists. Whatever I haven't completely redone now, I'll probably end up completely redoing it in the future.
That said, as far as this topic is concerned, I only have to redo some of Mona/Sara's levels and revise some of the main girls' levels. At the moment that's all I'm going to redo in v11.
Last but not least, I've been working on the complete rework of the building system all these days.
From now on it will work a bit differently but the concept is the same: Upgrade all kinds of Gold Valley buildings to receive different benefits passively.
Not only that but when you meet the builders and the accountant a side quest is unlocked. This side quest will last almost the entire game as it is about rebuilding Gold Valley and the accountant will assign you different tasks to do so. Like everything else, you will be rewarded for it including spicy stuff.
Oh yeah, before I forget, from now on Sara is unlocked by finishing the rank quest. I have merged Sara's side quest into the rank quest, as it should have been from the beginning. I'll do a second test but it should work fine.
These are big changes internally/structurally but don't worry too much, I'll adapt the code so that for a few versions when loading the game, it will do some checks so that nothing explodes in your saves.
I'll update the work in progress in a while but the update is almost finished. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have time to finish it by the weekend as I had originally planned... I have to do the second part of Lisapi's fate, all the Enya stuff which includes a new peculiar Moonstar and... nothing else, well yes, I have to make a new menu (interface) but for the moment I'm going to keep it simple so it won't take me too much time to work on it.
I'll say goodbye for today, see you soon!
