Dev Diary: Week #21
No cringe intro, let's get to the point!
For those who don't want to read the whole post, I'll mention what's important:
After several recent events, I've decided not to delay the v0.16.0 anymore and I'm going to release it in a few weeks. My estimate is 5 weeks maximum, maybe sooner. I'm saying a somewhat distant date because I really want to finish revising the dialogues of the whole game + the rest of the work that I still have to do.
I'm also going to mention what's included, but only in a very rough way:
- Complete dialogues overhaul.
- Scenes revised and redone if necessary (the whole game, including fetishes).
- Gallery feature.
- Duty feature (RPG, a way to reward repetitive tasks with materials/items).
- Final overhaul of the easy mode (hide correctly everything that shouldn't appear in this mode).
- Changes to the mood system in hard mode (no more angry girls).
- New rank quest.
- Maria/Mara's pregnancy.
- New minigame related to sexiness (affinity).
- Yuna/Anna/Mara available to play blackjack.
- Fixed many bugs.
- And more.
That said, I'm going to detail why this change a bit, as there was supposed to be a v0.15.90.
I honestly don't even know where to start, I'm still trying to assimilate what has happened these last few days. Nothing related to anything personal, family, or whatever, I'm talking about Illusion, the company behind Koikatsu, Honey Select 1 and 2, etc going out of business. I didn't know this and I didn't know that they have been developing for more than 20 years, I even know some of their games but that's not relevant.
The important thing comes here... As you already know, any dev that uses Koikatsu (LA for example), Honey Select 1 (Harem Hotel for example), Honey Select 2 (Eternum if I'm not wrong for example), and... I don't think anyone uses other engines that belong to Illusion. Well, it's something that everybody knows and is never talked about but it's obvious: All that belongs (belonged) to Illusion and is not allowed for commercial use (including making money through crowdfunding platforms like Patreon).
Why do I explain something that is obvious? Well, Illusion officially disappears at the end of August and the intellectual property will return to Illusion's parent company. This means that there is no longer a company in between saying "Okay, we don't like you using our assets but we turn a blind eye". This means that if before it was all a grey area because of legal tricks and etc, now it's all "who knows what's going to happen". I'm not saying that we should suddenly become alarmists now, but I have a bad feeling about it, but I hope to be wrong.
Who is supposedly going to claim anything legal now? Nobody? The parent company? Who knows. What if a company decides to buy all the rights and force all the sites to ban that content as FAKKU did? These are questions that should keep anyone who does this for a living awake at night.
Obviously, when I started in all this I started with the mentality of "welp, everybody does the same thing and nothing happens, so leggo" but always with the clear objective of one day moving on to other engines and projects.
So after several days of meditating and thinking, I've decided that I'm going to cancel- Naaaah... what I've decided is to hurry up a bit in my plans, not really hurry but without pause.
The good news is that I'm going to work to finish the last "reworks" that I have half done and from there on I'll be able to move forward with the main story, girls, new stuff, etc.
The bad news is that the big rework I had in mind is not going to happen. I was planning to rework all the animations of the game to add physics to the MC's pp, animated cum, a new feature where you can choose different camera focus depending on X stat, and several other things like adding X-ray. This won't happen now or ever, at least not in LA 1.
With all this, I also have to say that LA 2 won't be designed using HS 2... a pity because I really like that engine, but well, I wouldn't like to wake up one day with an email from Patreon in which I'll either remove all my content or I'll go straight to unemployment. And no, using tricks wouldn't work either, I'm happy for those who use tricks even to earn money through Patreon making Lolicon/incest content, and stuff like that but I like to play safe.
So... it's quite sad for me in general but mostly because I have to assimilate that everything I had planned is not going to happen, and it's something I wanted to make an effort even if the result wasn't WOW OMG 10/10 IGN.
But as with the rest of the ideas I discarded for LA (and I keep discarding), anything can happen in future projects for sure.
So the important thing about all this... my engine transition from Koikatsu (LA 1 and LA 1,5) -> HS2 (LA 2) -> DAZ (????) is going to be directly Koikatsu (LA 1) -> DAZ (LA 2). Since the future is blurred, I'll advance my transition to something where I have all the IP rights (DAZ) so I can disassociate any other projects from my main income source, Patreon.
In any case, there is still content left for LA 1, stories to tell, events, plot twists, etc.
I like working using Koi/HS2 because the Studio is really easy to use and the rendering is fast unlike DAZ, so it doesn't mean I'm going to stop developing games using Koi/HS2 in the future but it will be something secondary and unlinked to Patreon, the same as when I was creating content in Pivix, nobody knew about it right? I did my job well then.
If anyone still doesn't know what DAZ is, I always use the same example, I think "Being a D.I.K" is one of the most known games, but any porn game on Steam that is 3D "realistic" style is probably designed using DAZ 3D (even here you can find those games).
Having said all that, I'm going to say goodbye for today. I insist that this doesn't affect the development of LA 1, nothing is going to change except completely discarding the final reworks I had planned to do.
The only thing it does affect is the changes in plans for LA 2 (artistic side), just when I happen to have been thinking about the project for 2-3 weeks now... Coincidence? I don't think so. I'm really looking forward to working on it because I have a bunch of ideas for a project like that (and surely when I get to work on it, I'll complain because it's a lot of work, predictably).
And that's all, I just wanted to let you know all this.
See you soon with the v16 beta!

Is DAZ 3D really that widespread? I know of it, but I rarely hear people talk about it. I always thought blender is used for easy and inexpensive modelling/rigging/animation etc.
Edit: Right, I got confused there. Forgot that Daz3D already has a catalogue of models that can be customized.
Do we know why Illusion is going out of business?
My two guesses would be either severe pirating or not a big enough audience for Character Creator games.
(I'd buy them all if I had the extra money for them, but they aren't "primary" games for me.)
